2017 Back to School Information

The 2017-18 school year starts Tuesday, Sept. 5 for students in grades kindergarten through 12. Prekindergarten and Three's program students begin the school year on Tuesday, Sept. 12. Check out the back-to-school resources below.

Registration information

Schools have staff available to register children for the upcoming school year. Call the school in which your child is zoned to attend to find out if there are specific registration dates and times. Parents will need the following information to register a child for school:

·         A physical examination by a physician or a certified nurse practitioner (completed between nine months prior to and six months after entering school).

·         Proof of required immunizations – a list of required student immunizations is posted at http://www.ccboe.com/ss/immunizations/.

·         Proof that the student has completed the prior grade to the one in which the parent is seeking enrollment, such as a report card marked promoted.

·         Birth certificate or other acceptable proof of birth (passport/visa, physician’s certificate, baptismal or church certification, hospital certification or birth registration).

·         Two proofs of residence. CCPS has guidelines regarding acceptable proofs of residence. Visit http://www.ccboe.com/ss/how-to-register/ for a complete list.

vaccine requirements

Maryland law requires students to have minimum immunization levels to attend school. Required vaccines depend on the age and grade level of the child and include DPT, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, hepatitis B, Hib, Prevnar, Tdap and meningococcal. For the 2017-18 school year, all students in kindergarten, first-, second- and third-grades are required to have two doses of the varicella, or chickenpox, vaccine. All seventh and eighth graders, as well as high school freshmen and sophomores, must have a Tdap and meningococcal vaccine. Students can receive all required vaccines at their physician’s office.

Students can be admitted to school without completed immunizations, but parents have to show proof of an appointment occurring within 20 calendar days. The Charles County Department of Health is holding vaccine clinics for children. Click here for a complete schedule.

school bus stops, assignments

Bus route information is available on the School Locator app, http://schoollocator.ccboe.com/. The school system has a bus hotline for parents to call with questions about bus routes. Call 301-932-6655 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 31-Sept. 1, and 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 5-6 to reach the hotline.

New gradebook, Youvue

New this school year is an online gradebook program for parents, students and teachers to track academic progress, attendance, class assignments and more. CCPS is launching YouVue, a program that replaces the Edline gradebook as well as an aging student information system used by CCPS for nearly 40 years. YouVue includes parent access, called ParentVue, student access, or StudentVue, and teacher access, called TeacherVue.

Account activation letters for parents will be available at schools the week of Aug. 28. Parents can pick up their letters during orientations set for that week and must provide photo identification. The system will be live for parent access later this month. Read more here.

Get important updates by text

CCPS will now use text messages as part of systemwide and school notifications. Recipients must opt-in to receive text alerts. On Oct. 1, parents and staff will receive an opt-in text message from CCPS through a new School Messenger notification tool. To opt-in, users must text YES or Y to 67587. Text STOP to 67587 at any time to stop receiving text message alerts from CCPS. Standard text message rates by cell phone carriers apply. Read more here.

school orientations, open house events

Orientations and back-to-school events are planned for late August and September. Click here for a complete list of orientations. Most open house events are scheduled for September. Click here for a complete list of scheduled open houses.

no changes this year in meal prices

Breakfast and lunch prices remain the same this year for CCPS students. At the elementary-school level, breakfast is $1.25 and lunch is $2.65. At the middle- and high-school levels, breakfast is $1.40 and lunch is $2.90. Meal selections and offerings are posted online at http://ccboe.nutrislice.com/.

CCPS uses a cafeteria prepayment system called MyPaymentsPlus, which is a secure, web-based system that allows parents to deposit funds electronically to their child’s cafeteria account. Visit https://www2.mypaymentsplus.com/ to sign up for or access your account. Parents can monitor their child's meal account for free. MyPaymentsPlus charges a 3.75 percent deposit fee on the total amount per transaction. Parents can also pay by cash or check at their child's school.

CCPS has procedures that guide how the school system handles unpaid meal accounts. Parents/guardians are expected to ensure that their child’s meal account is properly funded. CCPS will first notify parents through email and voicemail when a child’s account is empty, or has a $0 balance. Students with no money on their meal accounts receive an initial credit from CCPS and the amount varies depending upon the grade level of the child. Click here to read the full guidelines.
