Happy Birthday Dr. Gustavus Brown, Jr.

Born in 1747, Dr. Gustavus Richard Brown, Jr. was a prominent physician throughout Maryland and parts of Virginia. He left Charles County for Scotland, to attend the University of Edinburgh. In 1768, Dr. Brown received a degree in medicine and returned to Charles County where he opened a practice in Nanjemoy.

An active patriot during the Revolutionary War, Brown tended to wounded troops and served as a member of the Committee of Correspondence in 1774. Dr. Brown was also a member of the Maryland State Convention in 1787 that ratified the Constitution of the United States. Dr. Brown was noted to have had an interest in education and helped found the Medical and Chirugical Faculty of Maryland in 1799. Dr. Brown is remembered for visiting the bedside of his close friend, President George Washington, during Washington’s last illness.

Our celebration of Dr. Gustavus Brown's 262nd birthday on October 21, 2009. Each student launched an environmentally friendly helium-filled latex balloon, in either gold or blue, our school colors. Banners and school buses complemented our group photo. After the balloons were launched, students paraded around our community, then partied with cake in the Bulldog Cafe, baked by Miss Sara and our "lunch ladies."

It was reported that Charles County Schools were closed on Friday, October 17th for the annual MSTA Convention, however the students at Dr. Brown Elementary School knew the real reason for a holiday! October 17th is the birthday of Dr. Gustavus Richard Brown, Jr., for whom the school is named. So much fun that Principal Marvin Jones proclaimed his actual birthday, October 17th, a school holiday!

The staff and student body posed for a group photo before a patriotic parade through the community on October 16, 2008, replete with banners, flags, songs, chants and costume. Birthday cake complemented classroom activities celebrating the life and times of Dr. Brown.
