Who is William A. Diggs?


William A. Diggs was a Charles County Public Schools student who later became a teacher. He attended Chicamuxen Elementary School and Pomonkey High School. He earned his teaching degree at Bowie State Teacher’s College and returned to teach at Bel Alton High School. Diggs is one of the first life members of the Charles County Branch of the NAACP and a co-founder of the African American Heritage Society. He founded the African American museum and after his retirement from the school system he spent his time traveling across the county and state to talk about African American History in Charles County. Diggs was born on Dec. 31, 1918 and died on Feb. 12, 1995 at the age of 76.

When will Diggs open?


The school is scheduled to open Aug. 28, 2006 the first day of school for the 2006-07 school year. Construction is on schedule and the school system expects no delays in opening the school on time.

What are the school hours for students?


The school day will begin at 9:20 a.m. and end at 3:50 p.m.

Who are the principal and vice principal?


Kristin Shields, vice principal at Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School, has been named by the Board of Education as principal of William Diggs Elementary School for the 2006-07 school year. Sandra McDuffie, vice principal at Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, will serve as vice principal.

When will students be selected for the school?


Students for Diggs Elementary will be identified through the redistricting process. Students in neighborhoods zoned for Diggs will be notified following the April 18 Board of Education’s meeting, when a final decision on rezoning is expected.

What are the school mascot and colors?


Students will select the school mascot and colors. Principal Kristin Shields plans to establish a Spirit Committee, composed of parents and students, once students attending Diggs are identified. She hopes the committee will come up with suggestions for a mascot and colors and then she plans to send a ballot to all incoming students for a vote.

Will there be full-day kindergarten?


All kindergarten classes at Diggs will be full day. Charles County Public Schools is moving forward to meet the mandate by the state to have full-day kindergarten in all elementary schools by the 2007-08 school year.

How do I register my child for kindergarten or pre-kindergarten


Pre-K and Kindergarten students will continue to register at the schools they were zoned for before they were redistricted to William A. Diggs. This includes students in Pre-K and Kindergarten who are new to Charles County Public Schools.

Students in grades 1-5 who are new to Charles County Public Schools will register with the Department of Student Services at Central Office. Please contact Student Services at 301-934-7326 before register your child. For more information visit our registration page.

Is there a prekindergarten at Diggs?


Yes, prekindergarten classes will be offered at Diggs. Again, apply at the school your child is currently zoned to attend in order to be considered for the classes. Applications for students who are rezoned will be forwarded to Mrs. Shields for review. Students must be four years old by Sept. 1, 2006, in order to be eligible to attend prekindergarten. Parents of students interested in attending Charles County Public Schools prekindergarten program are required to go through an application process. Students for the programs at each school are selected based on state criteria. The school selection criteria for state-funded prekindergarten programs are based on state guidelines that rank schools on a variety of factors including free/reduced lunch count and proximity to Head Start and child care/community-based preschool programs. Space is limited to 20 children in each class. Transportation is provided if the child lives in an established bus zone.

Will there be before and after-care offered?


Yes, before and after-school care is planned for Diggs. The extended-day program is offered at all public elementary schools in Charles County and is provided through a contract with AlphaBEST Education, Inc.

What is different from my child’s current school and Diggs?


The only difference is the actual building and location. Charles County Public Schools offers the same strong curriculum and educational opportunities at all elementary schools.
