First Grade News

for the month of

May

Our Reading theme continues through the end of the year.  The children will learn and understand new vocabulary, base words and word endings (s, ed, ing), summarizing a story, nouns, classification and vowel patterns.  We will do a long study of Mexico that will involve reading several books and participating in many cultural activities.

The academic skill focuses in Math are number sense and problem solving.  In addition, we will focus on number order, equations, and skip counting.  These are important skills that students should master by the end of 1st grade.

Science will have us learning about living things.  During this time we will learn about several different plants and animals.

For Health, we will study Summer Safety.

Please make reading for enjoyment a priority in your home.  Encourage your child to read and write independently at home.  At school, support is given as each new lesson is taught, however; independence is also expected.  Praise and encouragement follow ~ it’s so rewarding for everyone!
