Head Start
Head Start serves the child development needs of preschool children and their
low-income families. The Head Start programs at both schools are accredited by
the Maryland State Department of Education. The program at Dr. Mudd is 6 1/2
hours a day and operates throughout the summer with a capacity of 20 children.
Head Start at Eva Turner is a 3 1/2 hour program with morning and afternoon
sessions. The program operates during the school year with a capacity of 60
children

Pre-K
The Pre-K program serves children ages 3-4 years old, including those who may
face special
challenges emotionally, socially, or physically. The Pre-K programs are
validated by the Maryland State Department of Education.

Kindergarten
The Judy Center brought full-day kindergarten to both schools. Every
Kindergarten classroom has a certified teacher with a full-time assistant in
each classroom. The
Kindergarten programs at both schools are validated by the Maryland State
Department of Education.

School Library Services
All Judy Center classrooms visit the school libraries once a week to
participate in rich literacy activities and to check out books.
Art, Music and Physical Education
Additional art, music and physical education programs are provided by the Judy
Centers for Head Start and Pre-K children. These specialty classes enhance the
regular curriculum and are free to children.
Child Care Programs
KinderCare provides full-time child care for children 6 weeks through age 4, as
well as before
and after school programs for children in Pre-K and Head Start. KinderCare is
open
from 6:00 A.M. to 6:30 P.M. and is open year-round.
AlphaBEST provides before and after school program for
children in Kindergarten through 5th grade.
Purchase of Care Vouchers are accepted by KinderCare and AlphaBEST. Tuition
assistance is available from the Judy Centers for families who
qualify.

Sumer Programs
The Judy Centers sponsor a 4-week program during the summer to enhance
children's learning. The curriculum includes themes of interest to young
children and complementary field trips. Transportation and meals are provided.
Teachers recommend children for this free 4 1/2 hours per day program.
Head Start at Dr. Mudd operates during the summer months for 6 ½ hours a day
and is free. Head Start at Eva Turner sponsors a summer program for 20
children that runs 6 ½ hours per day and is free.
KinderCare operates year round and is available for Judy Center children.
Tuition assistance is available for those who qualify.
Daytime Playgroups
Playgroups for infants and toddlers and their parents are held weekly at the
schools. The 1 hour sessions provide developmentally appropriate activities
for young children and their parents.

Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities
The Infants and Toddlers Program is a family-centered approach to assisting
families with infants and toddlers, birth through 2 years old who may be
delayed in development or have disabilities. Services will vary with the needs
of the child and his/her family. Many services are free or may be covered by
insurance, medical assistance or billed on a sliding scale according to income
and family size. Services are provided by Charles County Public Schools,
Charles County Department of Social Services, Charles County Health Department,
and other public and private agencies in the county.

Adult Education
The Adult Education Program provides programs to
prepare parents for the GED test or the External Diploma Program. The classes
also help parents who have a high school diploma to improve their skills. This
help with
reading, math and writing skills assists parents in becoming their child's
first teacher.
The Adult Education Program co-sponsors the ICAN (In-home Computer Access Now)
program with the Judy Centers. Through this program, a computer is installed
in qualified homes with Judy Center aged children. A teacher visits the home
each
week for 16 weeks to give instruction to the parent on Microsoft Office related
academic areas. Software for each child is also installed and the parent is
instructed on how to work with the children on the computer.

Health Services
Children must be healthy in order to learn. The Judy Centers can help families
find health services for their child, and can help parents apply for health
insurance for their child.
Dental services are provided by Dr. James A Heffner and Dr. Felix Aguto and
their Associates for children who qualify. The Judy center staff schedules
appointments for you. Parents must accompany their children at dental
appointments.
Transportation to doctor and dental appointments can be arranged by the Judy
Centers if necessary.

Case Management
The Judy Center staff has a case management process in place to effectively
coordinate services for families who may need different types of assistance
from several agencies or organizations. Family Service Coordinators work
closely with families to identify services needed and help families arrange for
those services. They stay in close contact with families to monitor their
progress.

Family Involvement
Research shows that family involvement in their child's school contributes to
their success in school. The Judy Centers provide many opportunities for
families to participate and be more involved in their children's lives in ways
that will better prepare them for first grade. Activities include monthly
story hours, family field trips, an annual harvest festival and holiday parade,
and other special events. There are also parent workshops and
support groups to help increase parent knowledge of child development and
parenting skills, adult education classes to increase parents' education
levels, and a parent and child computer program.
