Computer Science
The Lackey High School Computer
Technology Department offers courses in computer programming and computer
internship. Students can receive college credit for courses through an
articulation agreement with the College of Southern Maryland.
Computer Internship
A two-credit course. Students
will serve as technicians and information systems specialists for their
high school. They will be introduced to network administration and basic
computer repair. Students will solve hardware and software problems throughout
the entire school. Independent work and exploration, under the guidance
of their instructor, will be a major part of this course. Special computer-related
privileges come with this advanced learning opportunity. With the additional
rights and privileges come added student expectations of responsibility,
especially the expectation that no intern will abuse or misuse this privilege.
Java Programming- Honors
This course provides an introduction to the Java programming language and Object Oriented Programming. Topics include creating a Java application and applet, manipulating data using methods, decision making and repetition with reusable objects, arrays, loops, layout managers using external classes, creating menus and button arrays using the abstract windows toolkit, swing interfaces with sorting and searching, writing data to a sequential data file, and accessing databases using JDBC.
Programming Design & Logic
A beginning/intermediate
level programming course. Emphasis will be placed on structured
programming, logic, and professional applications. Students will
learn the basics of programming, in addition to more advanced programming
concepts, such as sort techniques, arrays, and menus. Visual Basic
will be the primary language used in this course. A scaled down
Visual Basic interface will be used for for basic thru intermediate
programming. OOP and OOED programming concepts along with the VB
toolbox with controls will be introduced at the end of the year.
Other topics relating to Computer Science will be addressed, including
computer history and computer ethics.
Website Design & Development
This is currently a pilot course at the beginning/intermediate
level. Emphasis will be placed on creating visually appealing and functional websites. Students will
learn the basics of the html language, in addition to more advanced website topics, such as javascript and xhtml. Dreamweaver Studio 8
will be the primary software used in this course.
