Matula Elementary Raises $6000.00 for Kids for the Carousel Project

Students, Staff, families, and friends of Matula Elementary School raised $6000.00 for the “Kids for the Carousel Project”. On December 19, 2007 Mrs. Carol Leveillee presented Bob Boyce, President and Burkey Boggs, Vice President of the Southern Maryland Carousel Group with the $6000.00 check. The men were amazed at the large donation that Matula was able to raise to support the Carousel project. Mrs. Leveillee explained that it took 2 years of hard work and determination. Matula set a container for donations out at each family night and a Matula family business, Eagle Management System LLC, gave a very generous donation to the project.

The Southern Maryland Carousel Group, Inc. established in 2004, plans to construct and operate an Old World-style carousel in Charles County. The carousel will be housed in a modern, spacious facility that will also include a museum, learning center, gift shop and other amenities.
Their plan for the carousel is to have approximately 52 amenities – 40 ponies, 2 chariots, and 10 rounding boards. Since a carousel provides a natural array of themes – including horses, motion, the visual arts, music, nostalgia, and especially childhood, they hope that it will enhance other Charles County activities. There will be other attractions geared to both children and adults at the museum and learning center. Children can learn about woodcarving and carousel art, demonstrated by local artists as well as noted artists and carvers from outside the area. Schools will be able to tour the carousel and museum and make use of the learning center on a scheduled basis.

There will be a special dolphin carved just for the carousel for children to ride. Mrs. Leveillee was assured that the dolphin would be smiling and that the words, “Mary H. Matula Elementary School” will be engraved for all to see that the Matula Family played an important role in making the Carousel a reality.
