April, 2007 School Yard Habitat
Begins Many of you may have
already seen or heard about the new Schoolyard Habitat program at our school.
Currently, the back portion of our school grounds is being transformed into a
beautiful learning environment for our students and community. This project
was made possible through a joint project with the Charles County Department
of Planning and Growth Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the
Charles County School Board, and the CCPS Environmental Resource Center.
Students will be able to access the area during school hours for integrated
lessons in science, math, reading, and writing. The attached article suggests
that creating a schoolyard habitat project does indeed increase and enhance
student achievement in all subject areas. I have also included a picture of a
schoolyard habitat completed at a school in Anne Arundel County. You can see
that this project will greatly enhance our school. In
addition, the Bayscapes program will provide a planting area with plants
native to this area in the location by the school marquee/sign board off of
Copley Avenue. This, too, will serve as an educational center for the
students. Plants will be identified so that community members can learn about
what plants are appropriate for our region, and students will do studies
using this area as well. We are very excited about these projects, and we
hope that you share in our excitement. Please mark your calendar for these
important dates: Saturday, April 21-Bayscapes Planting project and the week
of May 7-Backyard Habitat Planting. More information will follow this
newsletter. Write or call the school if you are interested in being a part of
the planting work that is needed for these two projects. MESA Students Shine in Competition Students on the MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement)

including a dance in April, and a party on June 8th. See your
child’s teacher or the main office at school if you would like to
assist in any way. Hopefully, we can all come together to make these final
