January, 2007 A Fresh New Look
Some of you may have noticed that we have been
having some improvements in the building lately. Central office employees
have been busily painting walls and doors. We received new front door mats
that help to clean off dirt on shoes. We received a new stage curtain and
cafeteria/gym divider curtain this fall, and we received new cafeteria tables
as well. We want to thank the Charles County Board of Education for their
continued support as we continue to make our school pleasing and conducive to
learning. Computer Bowl
Students Get Ready!!! The following students will be
participating in the annual SMECO Computer Bowl in January. These students
complete a series of questions as a team, in the areas of math, social
studies, literature, science, and general knowledge. Their score will be
electronically submitted and compared to other competing schools. GOOD LUCK
TO THESE TEAM MEMBERS:
Quarter Million
Math Problem Challenge By now you might have heard about the
Quarter Million Math Problem Challenge, now in its second year!!!!! This is
strictly voluntary on your child’s part, as these problems are in
addition to their required math homework, which should be done first. Students
in grades Kindergarten through 5th grade simply get additional
problems from their teacher, complete them, and then turn them into the
designated area in the front office. As of press time, the current standings
are as follows: Grade 2, First
Place 28,000 problems Grade 5, Second
Place 5,000 problems Grade 3, Third
Place 3,000 problems Second grader
Hassan Habib has done almost 2,000 problems by himself-CONGRATULATIONS! Citizen

honored as citizen of the first quarter, now referred to as “The Wisest
Owl,” at a ceremony in November: Ashland

will be provided. A flyer describing the activities for the night will be
sent out in early January. Return your RSVP early so that you won’t
miss out on all the fun on that night!!! In addition, students will be taking the
Reading Challenge this year. Students will receive an OWL card. They are to
put the name of a book they read and their name on the card and turn it into
their teacher. We are trying to “line the walls” with their owl
cards!!!! In addition, the Science Fair Winners will be announced, and parents will get to
view their child’s science fair project-EVERYONE IS A WINNER!!! SEE YOU
THEN!!! Middleton Peer Mediators The following grade 4 students went
to a Peer Mediation Training Workshop in December with Ms. Pat
O’Connor, Guidance Counselor. They were trained in their roles for peer
mediation facilitators, who help students work out conflicts they are having.
We look forward to having these students help and serve other students in
following our 3 rules of Respect, Responsibility, and Safety. Patricia Atkinson Gabrielle Beach Deondre
