The NPHS
Career Center
is located in the Guidance Office. Students can research information
about careers, colleges, universities, technical schools, apprenticeship
programs, military service, financial aid and scholarships. Students
are encouraged to sign up to visit the Career Center in the morning
before classes start, during lunch shifts, or after school with
an appointment to take advantage of all the resources it has to
offer.
Freshmen
Create a file of the following documents
and notes: Copies of report cards, Lists of awards and honors, Lists
of school and community activities in which you are involved and
descriptions of what you do. Find out about AP and other honors-level
courses: What courses are available, whether or not you are eligible
for the classes that you want to take. Share your Career Planning Activity
and handouts with your parents. Visit some nearby campuses if you
are interested in local colleges. Keep up your grades. Do extra
credit whenever possible. Put forth your best effort. (improvement
counts)
Sophomores
Update
your file or start one if you haven’t already. (See above for a
list of what it should contain). Continue participation in academic
enrichment programs, summer workshops, and school activities. Visit
some nearby colleges over break. Learn about college costs and how
financial aid works. Start to identify 10 target colleges. Get the
admissions stats and download applications for your top colleges
– see what they expect.
Juniors
Visit the Career Center
for the most up-to-date information. Visit colleges during spring
break: large, small, public and private. Get a feel for what works
for you. Remember how important junior grades are for your class
rank and college applications.

Colleges That Change Lives 2008 programs are scheduled at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel
and Conference
Center on Saturday, May 17 at 12:00 and
the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner on Sunday, May 18 at 3:00. The program
includes a 30 minute information session and a college fair immediately

NCAA
Any junior wishing to play collegiate sports at the Division I or
Division II level needs to register with the National Collegiate
Athletic Association Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse in June/July.

you will need to compete in college. Remember ACT/SAT test
scores are reported directly from the testing agencies to NCAA Initial-Eligibility
Clearinghouse and to your prospective colleges.
COMCAST
has created Scholarships ON DEMAND to educate parents and students
on local resources and scholarships to supplement the cost of paying
for college. Comcast Digital Cable customers can access this
information 24 hours a day in the “Get Local” section of the Comcast
Video ON DEMAND.
The
Selective Service Administration requires all 18 year old males to register with the Selective
Service. You must register within 30 days of turning 18. Failure
to register for the selective service can affect your ability to
get a job, receive Federal college loans, grants and student aid,

Natural
Resources Careers Conference - Current
high school students (freshmen, sophomores and juniors) who are
interested in careers in forestry or natural resources can participate
in a one week free residential program with the Maryland Department
of Natural Resources; they even have the opportunity to earn credit

Engineering
Innovation A
summer engineering program at Johns
Hopkins University. This program uses a curriculum that demystifies
technology, emphasizes engineering’s innovative and creative aspects,
and exposes students to engineering’s diverse educational and career
opportunities. Designed for
rising high school juniors, seniors, and incoming college freshman.
Students who successfully complete the course with an A or B receive
three transferable elective college credits from Johns
Hopkins University.
