North Point robotics team advances to VEX Robotics World event

A robotics team from North Point High School, the Meme Team, is representing the school system at the 2017 VEX Worlds – VEX Robotics Competition High School Division next month after earning a tournament semifinalist ranking at the state event. The team includes North Point freshmen Christopher Moreno and Max Stine, sophomore Tyler Ulmschneider and juniors Alex Booth, Tyler Cataldo and Jabari Grubb.

North Point’s Meme Team is one of only 14 Maryland teams to qualify for the event, planned for April 19-22 in Louisville, Ky. The 2017 challenge is called Starstruck in which teams compete in matches with robots on a 12-foot-by-12-foot playing field. Teams use their robots to outmaneuver their opponents and score more points by placing stars and cubes in goal zones.

At the state challenge held March 4 at Dundalk High School, the Meme Team earned the tournament semifinalist ranking along with five other competing teams. Tournament Semifinalist recipients advance to the next level of competition. A total of 57 teams competed at the state challenge.

The Meme Team advanced to the state level after earning the Tournament Champion award at the Southern Maryland regional event in February. Coaches of the team are North Point teachers Melanie Cole and Timothy Yauch.

There are 558 teams registered to compete at the world’s event next month. Visit https://www.robotevents.com/robot-competitions/vex-robotics-competition/RE-VRC-17-4887.html for more information.
