Dear Students and Parents:

The Health and Physical Education Department at Mattawoman Middle School welcomes you to a new and exciting school year.  We believe that physical education experiences at our middle school will provide a challenge for the students to develop and maintain their physical and mental well being.

Our physical education program will focus on a wide variety of movement skills, fundamental sport and dance skills, and fitness activities.  These will be taught through a broad spectrum of sequentially planned activities in which the students will learn to move skillfully and effectively.  Students will learn to work independently and cooperatively.  They will be provided with opportunities to use their knowledge, skills, and ingenuity in coping with new and challenging activities.

THREE BASIC GOALS

1.     Students will develop an understanding of the components of physical fitness and an appreciation of an active, healthy lifestyle.

2.     Students will acquire knowledge of and an appreciation for efficient and creative movement through participation in a variety of physical education activities.

3.     Students will continue to develop self-concept, appropriate social and emotional behaviors, self-direction, and appreciation for individual differences.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIFORMS

The uniform will consist of a gray shirt and black “mesh” shorts.  They will cost $22.  All students are required to have a Mattawoman physical education uniform.  However, uniforms from other county schools are acceptable.  If this causes any concerns, please let us know.  For a limited time, we will have Mattawoman sweat pants and sweat shirts available for the students to use during cold weather.  The cost is $20 for each item, or $35 for the set.  The sweat pants and sweatshirts are strictly optional and cannot be used in place of the regular PE uniform.

DRESSING POLICY

In order to participate in physical education, all students in Charles County Middle Schools are required to dress into a county school uniform.  This includes athletic socks and proper tennis shoes (NO HEELS!)

Students are not permitted to wear jewelry (including watches) during physical education class.  We suggest any valuable jewelry not be brought to school on days that your child has physical education class.

Students involved in outdoor units during cooler weather will be permitted to wear clothing underneath their gym uniforms (sweats are preferred and encouraged).

If a student loses their uniform, they will be allowed to wear a plain (no writing) T-shirt and elastic waistband shorts for up to three consecutive classes.  After this period, parents will be contacted, and the student may be required to purchase a new uniform.

The following procedures will take place for students who do not adhere to the policy:

Within each unit (approximately three weeks), the FIRST time not dressed results in a student-teacher conference; the SECOND time not dressed results in written or oral parent notification; the THIRD time not dressed results in an office referral to an administrator.  The FOURTH time not dressed results in another office referral with possible suspension from school.

LOCKER ROOM PROCEDURES

All students are required to purchase a combination lock (Master brand preferred).  When they bring in the combination lock (NO KEY LOCKS), they will be assigned a small box locker in the locker room.  All personal belongings will be considered the student’s responsibility.  Consequently, students should never share lockers and/or their combinations with one another.  In accordance with the student handbook, it is highly recommended that ALL valuables remain at home.

Some rules to remember:

1.     Students are responsible for the care and condition of their box locker.  Any damage to their lockers should be immediately reported to a physical education teacher.

2.     Students should take their uniforms home for laundering on a regular basis.

3.     Students should not enter the locker room without teacher supervision.

4.     Students in the locker room will conduct themselves in a safe and orderly fashion at all times.

5.     Once students have changed into their uniform, a teacher will dismiss them.  Students will go directly to the gym, where they will meet in their assigned locations.

MEDICAL EXCUSES

Students are expected to dress and participate every day.  A parent’s note is required to excuse students from participating in classes because of illness for three days or LESS.  After three days, a doctor’s note is required.  Students excused for these reasons will participate in alternative activities and/or will complete written assignments as make-up work.

HEALTH

Each student will rotate into health for approximately a 9-week period at some point during the school year.  An information letter will be sent home at that time.

PLEASE NOTE:  Jewelry is not permitted during P.E. class.  Please refrain from getting new piercings if possible.  An additional form will need to be signed if this becomes an issue with your child.

SUMMARY

Active participation and a wholesome attitude will be the key to success at Mattawoman Middle School.  Your child’s fitness is a daily and lifelong activity that can be greatly enhanced by parental support.  We are looking forward to working with all students and their parents to make this a successful year!

Sincerely,
