Weight Training Standards

 

 

Subject Matter

Based on the Maryland State Standards and the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE).  The emphasis for the 10th-12th-grade students in Weight Training and Conditioning will be:

Standard 1 – Motor Skills

Demonstrates competency in a variety of weight lifting techniques.

  1. All students will demonstrate their ability to properly and safely participate in weight lifting activities.
  2. All students will demonstrate competence in specific stretching techniques to improve and maintain good flexibility.

Standard 2 – Learning Concepts

All students will demonstrate their ability to use cognitive information to enhance motor skills required in weight training.

  1. All students will be able to identify different muscles groups and how to develop them.
  2. All students will practice in ways that improve muscular strength and endurance, which also enhances body compositions.
  3. All students will evaluate and select ways to improve performance.

 

Standard 3 – Active Lifestyle

All students will develop an awareness of the opportunities exisisting outside of physical education class where they can participate in improving and maintaining their strength as part of their fitness program.

  1. All students’ will participate in an individualized fitness program.

 

Standard 4 – Physically Fit

All students will develop an individual strength and conditioning program, which will help them achieve their desired level of fitness.

  1. All students will design and understand benefits of a personal training program.
  2. All students will participate in an individual routine for improving cardiovascular and respiratory development.

 

Standard 5 – Social

Demonstrates responsible behavior, functions independently and influences the behavior of others in physical activity settings.

  1. All students will demonstrate proper safety techniques.
  2. All students will apply appropriate etiquette in all physical activity settings.

 

Standard 6 – Diversity

All students will demonstrate positive interaction in diverse groups.

  1. All students will exhibit respect and support for others while participating in learning activities.
  2. All students will respect the physical limitations of self and others.

 

Standard 7 – Values Exercise

All students’ will understand that physical activity and strength training provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction.

  1. All students will develop an understanding and appreciation of lifelong fitness and wellness through strength training.
  2. All students will make a commitment to physical activity as an important part of one’s lifestyle.

 

Prerequisites

          All students enrolled in Weight Training or Advanced PE I must have successfully passed the 9th grade physical education class with a “C” or better. Any student enrolled in Weight Training 2 or 3; or Advanced PE 2 or 3 must have successfully completed the prior level course of study i.e. successfully pass Weight Training 2 before advancing to Weight Training 3.
