  Follow this link to see why inverse square laws are inverse square laws.  Inverse square laws apply to fields and waves which emanate from spherical objects  -- things that behave as a point source.  Things like light intensity, sound intensity, electric fields, gravitational fields all obey the inverse square.  What this means is that they diminish as the square of the distance from the source.
