Washington Post Nomination Criteria
All nominees must be a teacher who:
- Has completed a minimum of five years teaching experience and are entering their sixth consecutive year as a teacher with Charles County Public Schools. Nominees must be serving as a teacher for the 2022 - 2023 school year.
- Is a full-time teacher in grades pre-k through 12.
- Has not been the recipient of either the Washington Post or Maryland Teacher of the Year awards in the past three years. Individuals nominated in the past are eligible for nomination.
- Instill in students a desire to learn and achieve.
- Understand the individual needs of students, encourage their talents, and foster their self-esteem.
- Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of subject matter and the ability to share it effectively with students.
- Foster cooperative relationships with their colleagues and the community.
- Demonstrate outstanding leadership.
- Maintain their teaching position throughout the 2023 - 2024 school year.
Nomination Process
Binders are not required. Principals or their designee will submit nominations electronically.
Nominees are encouraged to provide the information necessary to meet the submission guidelines for the following: career summary, 200-word biography (include word count), educational background, leadership experience, and accomplishments/honors received.
- Name of contact person, school name/address, position, names and positions of committee members.
- A minimum of four or five statements of support. Letters are required from the following: one letter from a parent, one letter from a student, one letter from a colleague, and one letter from an administrator or content specialist. All letters/statements of support must contain a physical signature and scanned as one PDF to rdibenedetto@ccboe.com.
- A resume (Submit as a Word document that can be edited).
- A 200-word biography that explains why they are an exceptional nominee. Nomination criteria listed above should be used as a guide. Please provide a word count. (Submit as a Word document that can be edited).
- Each nominee is required to complete two response questions and provide a word count for each response. Response questions and complete directions may be found under the TOY Response Question Requirements 2022-23 document. (Submit as a Word document that can be edited).
- A 400-word count description of contributions for each of the nomination criteria. (See above for complete list of nomination criteria. (List each criteria separately with a separate word count as a Word document that can be edited.)
- Educational background, listing degrees earned, certifications, majors and universities/colleges attended. (Submit as a Word document that can be edited).
- Leadership experience. (Submit as a Word document that can be edited).
- One vertical, 3 x 5, color photograph, “headshot only” and three action shots featuring the nominee and students. The headshot image must be a high-resolution JPG file with a minimum of 2MB.

Washington Post Principal of the Year Nomination Criteria
Nomination Criteria
All nominees must be a principal who:
- 1. Is a full-time principal (in grades Pre-K – 12) with five years of experience as a principal, three of which must be in their assigned school or school system in which he/or she is currently serving.
- Leadership Excellence: Earns the respect of their staff and students, inspires excellence and creativity, and provides an innovate vision for the future of the school.
- Collaboration: Establishes meaningful relationships throughout the educational system and community, and fosters a collaborative school culture that emphasizes working together within the common framework of strong educational values.
- Lifelong Learning: Keeps abreast of developments in the field of education.
- Support: Continues to play an active role in the classroom, lunchroom, the hallway, at morning drop-off, and afternoon dismissal.
- Creates an environment in which staff and students can flourish and grow.
- Maintain their position as principal throughout the 2023 - 2024 school year.
- Has not been the recipient of the Washington Post Principal of the Year Award in the past. Individuals nominated in the past are eligible for nomination.
Nomination Process
Binders are not required. All nominations and supporting documents will be submitted electronically.
- Name of contact person, school name/address and list of committee members. If nominated by a parent or student, contact information (i.e., phone number and address).
- A minimum of four to five statements of support, with a maximum of five statements of support. Maximum word count per letter is 400 words. Letters are required from the following: one letter from a parent, one letter from a student, one letter from a staff member, and one letter from a colleague. One statement of support must be from a professional educator. All letters/statements of support must contain a signature (electronic or physical) and be scanned as one document to rdibenedetto@ccboe.com. Letter submissions are due by 2:00 p.m. on November 11, 2022.
- A resume: A professional resume with relevant work history and training.
- A 200-word biography written to highlight the specific award for which the awardee was nominated. Nomination criteria listed above should be used as a guide. Please provide a word count.
- A 400-word count description of contributions in each of the nomination criteria. (See above for complete list of nomination criteria. List each criteria separately with a separate word count.)

Criteria for Outstanding Assistant Principal Award
The Charles County Public School System (CCPS) has established the Outstanding Vice Principal Award to recognize vice principals who exemplify excellence in their position. Vice Principals are essential to the effective and efficient operation of our schools. The recipient will be registered as a member of the NASSP/NAESP and must participate in the McDonald’s/NASSP/NAESP State and National Assistant Principal of the Year.
Eligibility
- To be eligible, the nominee must have a minimum of three (3) years of experience as a vice principal with Charles County Public Schools
- Not been previously selected as an outstanding vice principal within the past five (5) years.
Nomination Criteria
Educational Leadership
- Implements strategies to improve teaching through effective programs
- Involves teachers and other staff members in achieving the goals of the school
- Assists in ensuring that the school climate is positive and reflects high staff and student morale
- Functions effectively as a member of the school’s leadership team
Resolving Complex Problems
- Maintains awareness of current and emerging issues
- Resolves short-term issues while balancing them against long-term objectives
- Manages time and tasks effectively including delegation to others
- Utilizes technology to address educational issues and situations
Developing Self and Others
- Is committed to continued professional growth
- Teaches, coaches, and helps students and colleagues
- Demonstrates and fosters creativity and imagination in bringing about positive student growth
Community Service
- Involves the community and uses community resources for students
- Establishes partnerships with community groups to strengthen programs and support school goals.

- The fillable cover page must provide the name of the contact person and the committee members
- Nominations may be submitted by school system employees, students, and parents (employees may not nominate themselves)

- A brief history of nominee’s career to include dates, location, and positions worked only
- A description of contributions in each of the Nomination Criteria areas
- A maximum of twenty (20) current statements of support, including one from the school principal
Incomplete nomination packets will not be considered and will be returned.

Outstanding Non-Certificated Staff Awards
Nomination materials and supporting documents are due by electronic submission to the Office of Human Resources by 2:00 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 17, 2023.
Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has established the Outstanding Non-Certificated Staff Awards to recognize non-certificated personnel who exemplify excellence in their positions. Our school system's non-certificated personnel are essential to the effective and efficient operation of our schools.
Eight (8) awards will be presented, one in each of the following categories:
- Building service
- Food service
- Instructional support
- Secretary
- Maintenance
- Operations
- Information technology
- Central office support staff
Eligibility
- Full time non-certificated or technical employees of CCPS should be employed in the area for which they are nominated for a minimum of three (3) completed years
- Not been previously selected as an outstanding honoree, within the past five (5) years
Nomination Criteria
- Resourceful in seeking and completing job duties
- Seeks new knowledge and skills; knows and understands all aspects of the assigned job
- Utilizes technology where appropriate
- Fosters cooperative relationships with students, colleagues, and the community
- Demonstrates outstanding leadership

- Career list to include dates, location, and positions worked only
- Description of contributions in each of the Nomination Criteria areas
- Building Service, Food Service, Instructional Support, and Secretary nominations are to include a minimum of five (5) or a maximum of eight (8) statements of support, which must include one (1) from the school principal/supervisor, three (4) or a maximum of seven (7) from co-workers, students, parents, and/or the community
- Maintenance, Operations, Information Technology, and Central Office support staff (including Annex I and II) nominations are to include a minimum of five (5) or a maximum of eight (8)statements of support;, which must include one (1) from division supervisor, one (1) from the immediate supervisor, and either a minimum of three (3) or a maximum of six (6) from other department supervisors/principals, and three (3) from co-workers/other staff
Incomplete nomination binders will not be considered and will be returned to the contact person.
