Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students were among those who earned All-American status at the AAU Junior Olympic Games 2024 held July 27 to Aug. 3 at North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, N.C. The AAU Junior Olympic Games are known as the largest national multi-sport event for youth in the U.S., according to the AAU website.
Children and teens who are members of the Charles County Elite Track & Field Club represent Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s counties and the District of Columbia. Nathaniel and Pamela Muhammad founded the club over a decade ago with about 40 members, now it boosts more than 165.
“Sports is a great way to teach life lessons,” Pamela Muhammad said. Elite staff work with parents and guardians to meet the needs of club members to ensure their academic goals are being met while stoking their interest in health and fitness. Elite staff also helps families navigate the college recruitment process, NCAA Eligibility Center registration and other high school-to-college requirements. “Charles County Elite’s goal is to always create a safe space for every child on the team, so they can be their best, learn and grow into successful adults,” Muhammad said.
To earn All-American status at the Junior Olympics, an athlete must place eighth or higher in their event. Elite members are expected to be honored by the Charles County Commissioners at a future meeting.
