CCPS to implement statewide math changes next school year

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has adopted a new math policy that takes effect next school year, 2026-2027. The policy focuses on strengthening math achievement, ensuring equitable access to high-quality instruction for students and better preparedness for college, career and real-world problem solving.

The policy includes several changes including the following.

  • Move to statewide integrated Algebra I and Algebra II pathway, which will replace the current model of Algebra I, geometry then Algebra II sequence for students.
  • A minimum requirement of daily math instruction for all students in kindergarten through Grade 8.
  • Structured interventions and regular family communication with students who are identified as in need of support or are receiving targeted assistance.

Starting with the 2026-2027 school year, CCPS students will have updated course sequences, revised acceleration procedures and shifts in how daily math instruction is provided. MSDE’s policy goal is to ensure a deeper understanding by students, stronger math skill development and long-term success for all students.

CCPS is hosting two information sessions for parents, staff, students and the community to provide information about the policy changes. Registration is requested.
