Celebrating Community School Coordinator Week

Community Schools Coordinator Week is Sept. 14 to 20. Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has 14 Community Schools, a program that transforms a school into a place where educators, community members, families and students work together to strengthen conditions for student learning and health development, according to the Coalition for Community Schools.

CCPS works with the Maryland Center for Community Schools at Towson University, and since 2021 the program has grown with the adoption of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. The program includes more than 600 Community Schools throughout the state.

CCPS has 14 Community Schools, including

  • C. Paul Barnhart Elementary School.
  • Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School.
  • Indian Head Elementary School.
  • Daniel of St. Thomas Jenifer Elementary School.
  • Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School.
  • Dr. Samuel A. Mudd Elementary School.
  • J.C. Parks Elementary School.
  • J.P. Ryon Elementary School.
  • Eva Turner Elementary School.
  • William B. Wade Elementary School.
  • John Hanson Middle School.
  • Glymont Middle School.
  • Benjamin Stoddert Middle School.
  • Thomas Stone High School.

Each Community School has a coordinator who works as a liaison with parents and students, and community partners. Among the coordinator’s responsibilities are conducting a needs assessment, creating and implementing a strategic plan while fostering partnerships with community partners, and train and supervise volunteers.

To learn more about the Community School program and how to partner with schools, contact Bethany Goodwin at bgoodwin@ccboe.com or 301-934-7210.
