Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) high school juniors can apply for the 2025 Maryland (MD) Boys or Girls State program through the American Legion Auxiliary.
According to https://mdboysgirlsstate.org/, Girls State participants are taught the responsibilities of citizenship and the ideals of Americanism while Boys State attendees will be exposed to the rights, privileges, duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen.
MD Boys State will be held June 15-21, at McDaniel College in Westminster, and MD Girls State will take place June 15-20, at Salisbury University in Salisbury.
Boys State has been a program of the American Legion since 1935 before it was first offered to students in Maryland in 1947. Girls State started in 1937 as a one- or two-day leadership development opportunity for young women.
The program offers activities such as legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, college preparation, assemblies, bands, chorus and various recreational programs.
Every year rising high school seniors are selected by local American Legion posts throughout Maryland to attend the program. Expenses for the program are typically fully funded by a Maryland American Legion post, local business or community-based organization.
Students who previously attended a Boys/Girls State program are not eligible to apply for the 2025 program. The deadline to apply is Thursday, May 1.
