Marvin Jones named Essex County Public Schools Superintendent, formally announces CCPS retirement

Marvin Jones, Ed.D., a 25-year veteran educator with Charles County Public Schools (CCPS), has been appointed Superintendent of Schools for Essex County Public Schools in Virginia. His appointment was approved yesterday by the Essex County School Board and is effective July 1.

Jones – who currently serves as the CCPS Chief of Schools – recently announced his June 30 retirement from CCPS. While he leaves behind a 25-year legacy of leadership and commitment to CCPS staff and students, Jones said he looks forward to the next step in his career as Superintendent.

“Moving on from Charles County Public Schools is such a bittersweet decision, my having had such a long and fulfilling experience here, but as difficult as it is to leave, I am just as excited about the next phase of my career. I look forward to the opportunity to impact so many children and families in Virginia, just as I have in Maryland all these years,” Jones said.

Jones has been with CCPS since 2000 when he was hired as a vice principal at Arthur Middleton Elementary School. He began his career in education in 1992 as a special education teacher with Prince George’s County Public Schools. His educational career spans 33 years; Jones has held several roles that demonstrate his passion toward education and commitment to advancing achievements and opportunities for children.

“It has always been my desire to grow the potential of others, from the youngest of learners to the brightest of teachers, to our most skilled and expert principals and leaders. Ensuring that children receive the very best service we have to offer is non-negotiable; this work is not what we do, it is who we are; sentiments I truly believe and have tried to model throughout my career,” Jones said.

During his career with CCPS, Jones held the vice principal role for six years before being appointed principal at Dr. Gustavus Brown Elementary School in 2006. Jones also served as principal at Berry Elementary School for several years before his appointment as CCPS Executive Director of Schools in 2013. While serving as Executive Director, Jones provided interim principal leadership during critical transitions, first supporting the successful 2015 opening of St. Charles High School, and later guiding Benjamin Stoddert Middle School during its 2017-18 leadership transition.

In 2022, Jones was appointed as Chief of Schools by CCPS Superintendent Maria V. Navarro, Ed.D. In this role, Jones has led the oversight of all CCPS schools and centers, CCPS extracurricular activities and programs, along with several key CCPS departments and offices including the Office of School Safety and Security, Community Engagement and Equity, and Student Engagement and Conduct.

Jones is also responsible for the oversight of the Office of School Administration and Leadership, systemwide professional development for administrators including principals and assistant principals and serves on several CCPS committees tasked with teacher recruitment, leadership development, community relations and the implementation of the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future legislation. Additionally, since 2021, Jones has been the CCPS chief contract negotiator for the Board of Education of Charles County, leading teams through several successful bargaining seasons resulting in amenable agreements with the Education Association of Charles County (EACC) which represents certificated employees for the school system.

In 2018, Jones was the recipient of the James E. Richmond Excellence in Leadership Award, a CCPS award that acknowledges outstanding leadership among educators. He was also featured in a 2019 edition of African American Pride Magazine for his commitment to educational equity.

Jones’ last day with CCPS is Monday, June 30. He begins his tenure with Essex County Public Schools on Tuesday, July 1.
