Noteworthy — Spartones attend invitational, CCPS a cappella groups warm up for upcoming tournament

St. Charles High School’s Spartones, the school’s contemporary a cappella group, recently hit a high note at the Severn A Cappella Invitational.

Held at The Severn School in Severna Park on Jan. 11, the invitational invited high school a cappella groups from around the region to spend the day attending masterclasses and workshops led by professionals. The invitational was capped off by a showcase performance.

Among the bold name performers who shared tips and experiences with the high school singers were Deke Sharon, an international a cappella arranger who is known as the “godfather of a cappella,” and members of Vox Pop, an a cappella group based in Washington, D.C.

The Spartones, along with a cappella groups Takin’ Charge of Henry E. Lackey and the Screechin’ Eagles of North Point high schools, are preparing for the Varsity Vocals International Championship of High School A Cappella (ICHSA) tournament.

The Mid-Atlantic Quarterfinal 4 will be held at St. Charles 7 to 10 p.m., Feb. 7. Tickets are available at the Varsity Vocals site here. The top two finishing groups of the nine set to perform next month will advance to the ICHSA Mid-Atlantic Semifinal held in March.
