Earlier this week, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) was notified of a PowerSchool data breach. PowerSchool is a K-12 software solution, and the breach reportedly impacted school systems that use the PowerSchool Student Information System (SIS).
CCPS does not use the PowerSchool SIS product. The breach reportedly occurred Dec. 28, 2024, and PowerSchool reports it is contained. The SIS provider used by CCPS is Synergy through the software provider Edupoint.
CCPS does use the mass communication product owned by PowerSchool called School Messenger. PowerSchool acquired School Messenger in Fall 2023. There is no evidence of any impact to PowerSchool products outside of its SIS. CCPS has no indication it was impacted by the data breach, but other school systems in Maryland were impacted.
CCPS prioritizes data privacy and that of all students, staff and families. CCPS leaders are following this incident closely and working alongside our state government partners to continue ensuring the security of our records.
