St. Charles celebrates AP students for stellar marks on spring exams

St. Charles High School recently held a third annual AP Celebration lunch to honor students who passed one or more Advanced Placement (AP) exams in the spring.

“You should be so proud of yourselves,” Principal Tammika Little said at the event that included a lunch of pizza and desserts. “I know your teachers are so proud of you.”

Ninety-six St. Charles students earned a qualifying score on one or more AP tests last year. AP exams are scored on a 1-to-5 scale.

At St. Charles, 36 students are identified as AP Scholars, AP Scholars with Honor and AP Scholars with Distinction. To earn the awards, students must meet specific criteria outlined by The College Board.

To be named an AP Scholar, a student must earn a score of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams.

The AP Scholar with Honor designation is awarded to a student who receives an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams they take, and who score 3 or higher on four or more of the exams.

The AP Scholars with Distinction is granted to a student who earns an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams they take, and who receive a 3 or higher on five or more of the tests.

Throughout Charles County Public Schools (CCPS), more high school students are participating in AP classes and sitting for the exams. In the 2024-2025 school year, CCPS students in AP courses took more than 3,340 assessments which is an increase of almost 600 exams taken the previous year.
