Students can fill out the 2026-2027 FAFSA early

The U.S. Department of Education is inviting students and their families to fill out the 2026-2027 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form early this year. The 2026-2027 FAFSA form opens to the public on Oct. 1, but students can request access to fill out the application form this month through a beta testing feature. The FAFSA form is the free application students and families complete to apply for federal student aid for college or career and technical schools. This includes federal grants, loans and work-study funds. Many states and colleges use it to award their own aid.

Students can request to fill out the beta version of the FAFSA form and can check the status of being selected by visiting StudentAid.gov/joinbeta.

Students and their families who fill out and submit the beta FAFSA form do not have to submit another one once it is live on Oct. 1.

For questions, contact FAFSAbeta@ed.gov.
