Back-to-school message

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year. The beginning of every school year brings a refreshing and welcomed excitement for what is to come for both students and staff as we launch another year of teaching and learning. The focus of Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) staff remains the same – a commitment to working together to achieve excellence for every student. Not only do we focus on the academic achievement of and excellent instruction for students, but staff is also committed to the social, emotional and personal growth of each child who steps foot in our schools and centers. Student achievement and the overall well-being of children are at the forefront of each decision I, along with the CCPS leadership team, school administrators, teachers and staff, make every day.

The work of CCPS staff also remains focused on providing safe and healthy environments for students to grow and learn, as well as safe spaces for staff to work. Mental wellness and safety are top CCPS priorities. This school year, we will continue to offer students, staff, parents and families supports, programs and resources to ensure all are supported and engaged in the learning process. We have secured more support staff, such as counselors, to meet the needs of students as we continue to see a high number of children in schools who were impacted by the pandemic. The impacts range from mental health challenges and learning gaps, to behavior concerns and the need for more family support. The home-to-school relationship is a vital one and I continue to urge parents and families to be a part of the education process and be involved not only in their child’s education, but the school community.

Throughout the school year, CCPS will provide parents, staff and students with opportunities to engage with the school system. We need the support of many stakeholders in the community to ensure we have the staff, tools, resources, programs and more to support children in their learning. New this year is a dedicated office of community engagement. Through the work of this office, I anticipate school-community partnerships to grow which will result in more opportunities for parents to be a part of their child’s education. Please follow the CCPS website,, and your child’s school website for information about how you can be more engaged in the learning process. You can also follow us on our official social media outlets listed on the left side of this page.

The Parent Handbook/Calendar includes information about CCPS programs, policies and procedures. I urge you to take some time to review its contents and learn something new about the school system. As superintendent, I will continue to communicate regularly with families to keep you informed about school system news. I look forward to an exceptional school year. Thank you for your support.
