To enter prekindergarten for the 2017-18 school year, a child must be four years old by Sept. 1, 2017. The selection of prekindergarten students is based on criteria and guidelines set by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and Charles County Public Schools, with the first priority being children from economically disadvantaged or homeless families (Category one). Other children whose families do not meet the criteria for Category one may be admitted to prekindergarten if spaces are available, with priority given to children whose circumstances put them at risk for a lack of school readiness (Category two). Children without financial need or risk factors (Category three) will be placed if spaces still exist after all category one and category two students are placed. Prekindergarten applications will be accepted at the schools beginning Tuesday, April 18, 2017.

Before downloading or submitting a prekindergarten application, please read the following information concerning school year 2017-2018:

1. Category one applications received between April 18 and June 23 will be processed upon receipt, and families will be notified within two weeks of submitting the application. Category two applicants will be notified after August 1, and Category three applicants will be notified after the start of the school year.

2.Due to the school system’s transition to a new data system, all applications received between June 26 and July 31 will experience a delay of up to one month in processing. During this time, staff will not be able to provide status updates on any prekindergarten applications.

3.In order to comply with state regulations governing class size for prekindergarten, eligible category one applicants will be placed in their home schools until the class reaches capacity. Eligible category one applicants who apply after the class in the home school is full will be offered a placement at a different school, but parents will be required to provide transportation.
