The 2019 - 20 Maryland Teacher of the Year application is now available.

There is a two-tiered process for the selection of the candidate for the Maryland Teacher of the Year. The first step begins at the county level where applications are received and one candidate is selected to represent the Teacher of the Year for Charles County. Each Maryland county and Baltimore City selects one teacher and sends that completed application to the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The applications are then scored and tallied. Interviews are conducted, and the Maryland Teacher of the Year is selected through MSDE.

Applications for the Charles County candidate for Maryland Teacher of the Year are due by Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 3:00 p.m., to the Office of Human Resources.

Application Criteria

  1. Full-time teachers (classroom, resource, or media), who spend the majority of time teaching;
  2. Individuals who have completed a minimum of five years of teaching prior to their selection as Local Teacher of the Year (i.e., must be in the sixth year of teaching);
  3. Only one applicant per school;
  4. Articulate and willing to speak at numerous statewide conferences and other events;
  5. Outstanding teachers in their schools who have earned the respect of supervisors, students, parents and colleagues;
  6. Experts in their field who guide students in all backgrounds and abilities to achieve excellence; creators of a strong culture of respect and success; connect the classroom with key stakeholders to foster a stronger community; demonstrate leadership and innovation in and out of the classroom;
  7. Leaders in their schools, school systems, communities, and/or state or beyond;
  8. Teachers who have not been previously recognized as a District Teacher of the Year in Maryland;
  9. Able to attend at least four Teacher of the Year events beginning with the Teacher of the Year Gala & Forum the following day; and other events as required by MSDE;
  10. Able and willing to represent Maryland as a National Teacher of the Year;
  11. Must maintain their Charles County Public Schools teaching position for the 2019 - 20 school year.

Binder Requirements for Maryland Teacher of the Year

  • White, one-inch presentation, 3-ring binder
  • Front cover and spine labeled with your name and Charles County Public Schools
  • Binder must include Part I, Part II, Part III and Part IV of the application
  • Separate word counts must be submitted, as screen shots, for the following items:
  • Professional Biography
  • All Response Questions

Photos – two photographs of the same pose (headshot, color, portrait orientation, 300 ppi, .jpg format), hard copies, and an electronic copy (disk or flash drive). (Please see Part II – Resume, Biography and Photographs section of the application.) Professional business attire is recommended.

Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) is currently aligning their application with the National Teacher of the Year application in order to streamline their process. Updates will be posted on the Charles County Public Schools website as edits or changes to the application are received from MSDE. The applicant selected to represent Charles County Public Schools will be given the opportunity to update and finalize their binder prior to presenting their binder at the May 2019 ceremony and luncheon in Baltimore.
