Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is accepting nominations for its 2017 Principal of the Year Award. The annual award honors exemplary principals and recognizes those who go beyond the day-to-day demands of their position to create an exceptional educational environment. The selected principal will also serve as Charles County’s finalist in The Washington Post Principal of the Year awards program. Earbuds in, canvases out, with paints and other materials within arm’s reach — that was the scene Thursday, Nov. 10 when art students from the county’s seven high schools and Robert D. Stethem Educational Center visited Mallows Bay in Nanjemoy. About 80 students — from freshmen to seniors, from painters to photographers at all skill levels — spent the day working on pieces for the Mallows Bay Park Project. Learning about government, politics and the state legislature appealed to several Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students who recently applied for the 2017 Legislative Page Program. Interested high school seniors take part in a rigorous interview process in which they have to explain why they are deserving of one of three spots in the program. Some students apply because they are interested in pursuing a career in politics after high school, while others think the experience will provide them with a better understanding of how the state legislature operates. The All-County Middle and High School Honors band and orchestra will hold concerts this week. Students audition for a spot in each ensemble and rehearse with guest conductors to perfect musical selections. Student musicians in the All-County Orchestra will perform Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at Thomas Stone High School at 3785 Leonardtown Road in Waldorf. The All-County Band will take the stage Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. at St. Charles High School at 5305 Piney Church Road in Waldorf. The concerts are free and open to the public. Charles County Public Schools held the annual fall chess tournament on Saturday, Oct. 29 at Thomas Stone High School. A total of 94 students participated in the event, which is open to any student in grades kindergarten through 12. The tournament follows a Swiss-style format in which each student plays four games. Students competed in five grade-level divisions and trophies were awarded to first- and second-place winners. Other students that place among their division receive medals, and all participants received a certificate for their performance. Felix Cummings served as the tournament director. As a young man who grew up loving and playing football, Nov. 1 was no ordinary day for Henry E. Lackey High School senior Nathan Proctor, Jr. Surrounded by his family, friends and fellow Lackey varsity football teammates, Proctor was officially recognized by Under Armour as one of only 90 student athletes nationwide selected to play in the tenth annual Under Armour All-America football game.
