Lifelong Learning Center classes being held at John Hanson

Classes for students at the Lifelong Learning Center will continue at John Hanson Middle School for the remainder of the summer session. The summer session for students enrolled in programs at the Lifelong Learning Center ends on Friday, Aug. 15. Hanson is located next to the center, which was damaged last Wednesday during a fire. Students should enter Hanson through the main doors and will be directed to specific classroom areas.

Due to the change in location for classes, the Lifelong Learning Center is not able to provide childcare for the remainder of the summer session. Additionally, GED testing and orientations, as well as English as a Second Language (ESL) orientations, have been temporarily suspended. Classes began at Hanson earlier this week and according to Elizabeth Sinnes, the Lifelong Learning Center’s adult education coordinator, the transition is going well for both students and staff. Adult education program coordinators from facilities in Maryland, as well as other states, have also provided instructional materials to the center.

The Lifelong Learning Center housed the Charles County Adult Education Program, which offers a variety of daytime and evening classes for adults and includes preparation for a Maryland State High School Diploma, English as a Second Language, Basic Skills, Job Skills, and Citizenship classes.

Plans are underway to secure a location for the fall session of Lifelong Learning Center classes, which is scheduled to begin in early September. A fire destroyed the center’s classroom on July 9, causing the cancellation of adult education classes on two days last week. No one was injured in the fire.

Updated information about adult education classes and testing information will be posted on the CCPS website at www.ccboe.com and on the 24 hour information line at 301-934-7410 or 301-932-6656 as it becomes available.
