Summer School 2023

School-based counselors will work with parents and students to recommend summer school courses a student is eligible to take.  The registration process for summer school begins with the school counselor. Parents should contact their child's counselor if they want to register them for summer school. Upon receiving a letter from the school counselor, parents will complete registration for both make-up and original credit courses online using their ParentVue account. The registration process will begin Tuesday, May 30 at 8 a.m. via the ParentVue portal and closes on Tuesday, June 20 at 6 p.m.

Since Summer School lasts for only 18 days, it is very important that participating students maintain excellent attendance. Credit will be denied if a student misses more than two class periods. Students are not excused from class for dental appointments, camp, sports, or vacations. Students who cannot attend all classes should not enroll in Summer School. Students are also required to be on time for every class. Those who arrive late or leave early may not earn course credit. Suspension days are considered absences.

Cell phones must not be visible and must be powered off at all times during the school day. A cell phone set on vibrate or other non-audible mode is not considered “off.”

The CCPS dress code is in full effect for the duration of Summer School.

Final grade reports will be sent to all CCPS middle and high schools.* All financial obligations must be satisfied, and materials and books must be returned to the appropriate teacher before grades can be released.

High school graduation will be held on Friday, Aug, 4, 2023. The graduation will include only CCPS students that are registered for a Summer School course and who have met the requirements for the Maryland High School Diploma. Non-CCPS students are not eligible to participate in the Summer School graduation ceremony.

Students may bring snacks and lunch or receive a free bag lunch offered by the cafeteria. At no time are students permitted to leave campus during or in between registered classes.

Students are expected to follow all CCPS rules as well as Summer School rules and regulations. Behaviors warranting suspension may result in removal from the program. A signed copy of the rules are due at the time of registration. Credit will not be issued if a student is removed from Summer School for discipline reasons.

CCPS will be providing transportation to and from Summer School sites this year through hubs located throughout Charles County.

Early Childhood Summer Story Hours

Join us for summer story hours that focus on school readiness skills for children ages 2-5 who reside in Charles County. The goal of the group is to provide enriching experiences that promote school readiness skills including language and literacy, mathematics, social foundations, and gross and fine motor development. Each group meets for 4 weeks. Registered participants should plan to attend all 4 weeks.  A parent or caregiver must participate in each session alongside the child.  You must pre-register using the link below for your preferred group. Instruction for make-up courses will be held at Mattawoman Middle School for all middle school students, Thomas Stone High School (for students who attend North Point, Thomas Stone and Westlake high schools) and St. Charles High School (for students who attend Henry E. Lackey, La Plata, Maurice J. McDonough and St. Charles high schools). Teachers will provide instruction from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Fridays are set aside during summer school for students to complete course work. For students to receive credit, they must attend all class sessions and pass all assigned work, assessments, and assignments.

Instruction for original credit courses will take place using Apex and Zoom. Teachers will provide live instruction through Zoom from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Fridays are set aside during summer school for students to complete asynchronous work. All Zoom meetings are mandatory. For students to receive credit, they must attend all Zoom meetings and pass all assigned work, quizzes and assignments in Apex. There is no charge for original credit courses this summer.

Available Original Credit Courses

• English III – This course is for students who have met all the requirements to graduate at the end of their junior year and have an approved graduating junior application on file with their home school.
• English IV – This course is for students who have completed four years of high school and are not in their graduation cohort, or class. Students must get approval to enroll in this course from the supervising school counselor.
• Fit for Life/Health – Offered to current CCPS students who have completed one year of high school.
• Personal Financial Literacy (1.0 credit) - Offered to current CCPS 11^th and 12^th grade students.
• Geometry – Offered to current CCPS students who have completed one year of high school.
• Exploring Computer Science - Offered to current CCPS students who have completed one year of high school.

Original credit courses taken during summer school may not meet NCAA Clearinghouse requirements.
