UNIT 1: ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

Engineering Design
These activities introduce the process which engineers use when creating, developing, improving, or implementing ideas. The goal is to help students understand this process when coming up with a solution to a problem. In these experiments a problem has been presented with some questions to think about. Some ideas have been presented in helping them come up with a solution. Students should take notes as they work through the process. Length of time for the project will be different for each individual.
SHOW/HIDE 8 UNIT 1 ACTIVITIES

TOWER BUILD

Tower Build
Everyone loves a good card game! This challenge takes creativity and skill but no worries if you don’t know how to play cards because you are “playing’ with cards. With the right approach and plenty of patience, you can build a three, four or even a five story tower with one deck of playing cards.

WHAT FLOATS YOUR BOAT?

What Floats Your Boat?
Have you ever tossed a rock into a pond or a lake? Did you noticed that it sank immediately? Does this cause you to wonder how very heavy huge steel ships can float while a small very light rock sinks? Every object that you put into water will either float or sink regardless of size. Let’s learn about the principle of “Buoyancy” by doing a fun engineering challenge.

MINI CHALLENGES: ALL ABOUT AIR

All About Air
These mini challenges focus on activities designed to generate interest and understanding of
the scientific principals about air. Following these mini challenges you will have the
opportunity to construct a working hot air balloon, building on these concepts.

HOT AIR BALLOON

Grades: 7-8
Grade: 9
Hot Air Balloon
Use the engineering design process to build a hot air balloon that flies! Two designs are available: One geared towards grades 7 and 8, and the other geared towards grade 9. Work on one or both!

MY WASTE

My Waste
This past Wednesday, April 22, 2020 was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. This week’s lessons will focus on activities designed to generate interest and understanding of household waste that can either be recycled or repurposed.

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE

Recycle
This past Wednesday, April 22, 2020 was the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. This week’s lessons will focus on activities designed to generate interest and understanding of household waste that can either be recycled or repurposed.

WORKING CARDBOARD CHAIR

Chair
Design and construct a chair built entirely of cardboard that will support you, using no glue or adhesives of any kind.

UNIT 2: BACKYARD ECOSYSTEM

Backyard Ecosystem
In this unit we will take a look at some plants and animals and how they work together to give us all the food that we need for a healthy life. There will be make-at-home and outdoor activities to compliment the lessons.
SHOW/HIDE UNIT 2 ACTIVITIES

BEES: NUISANCE OR NECESSITY?

Bees
It is that time of year when there is more activity among flying insects, including bees. Most of us are wary of bees because of fear of being stung. This is more than just a painful inconvenience; for some it may lead to a severe life or death allergic reaction. Do bees serve a positive purpose in our lives? This week’s lesson will explore that question.

BEES: WHAT HAS 5 EYES, 6 LEGS, AND 2 SETS OF WINGS?

Bees
The answer may not be one you are thrilled with because it is a bee and many of us are wary of bees because of the fear of being stung and for a fair number of us this is more than just a painful inconvenience but may lead to a severe life or death allergic reaction. But bees do serve a critical role for human existence.

ANIMAL COMMUNICATION

Owl
This lesson focuses on the communication methods that are used by these animals and insects as they Find mates, Find
food, Establish dominance, Defend territory, Coordinate group behavior, Care for young and go about their natural existence.

PARTS OF A FLOWER

Flower
After learning about all of the parts of a flower, you’ll have the opportunity to see them for yourself. You will complete a detailed a flower dissection.

POLLINATION

Flower and bees
Learn more about how plants reproduce. Then, become a pollinator yourself!

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis is the backbone of the most basic and necessary relationships on earth. This lesson will explain how plants do this amazing process and it all happens in your backyard.
