Inclement Weather Staff Codes and Procedures
The following codes are used to inform employees of working conditions. Notification is made to radio and television stations at the same time school closings are announced (radio and television stations are also listed on page 10 in the Parent Handbook and School Calendar. Please be mindful that radio and television stations do not always run our information.
When schools are closed for students and there is no code announcement, offices are open. Only 12-month employees follow the code system.
Here are what the codes mean: |

Code 1 | 1 hour delay in reporting to work, except for all maintenance and operations staff employees, who report to work on time. Liberal leave is in effect. |
Code 2 | 2 hour delay in reporting to work, except for all maintenance and operations staff employees, who report to work on time. Liberal leave is in effect. |
Code Red | Schools Closed, only essential employees report to work. |
Code Blue | All buildings are closed. No employees report to work. |
Liberal Leave is unscheduled leave that employees may take in the event that extreme weather, or a similar emergency, prevents them from coming in to work as usual. Employees are allowed to be absent for a portion of a workday or the entire workday and are charged paid leave (i.e., annual, compensatory or personal) or leave without pay, as appropriate, for the period of absence. Employees must notify their supervisors if they intend to take liberal leave.
The designated essential employees include:
- Operations Supervisory Staff
- Building Service Managers
- Assistant Building Service Managers
- Building Service Workers
- Maintenance Staff as determined by the Supervisor of Maintenance
- Security Personnel
- Transportation Supervisory Staff as determined by the Director of Transportation

In the event it is necessary to dismiss early due to emergency situations or weather conditions, the Superintendent or her designee will make the decision for the school system. The telephone notification system already established for school closing will be implemented. As noted above, employees may use leave time as authorized in their respective negotiated agreement. Appropriate leave slips would be submitted to the immediate supervisor before leaving the assigned workstation.
As a clarification for days of delayed opening and early closing for students, non-teaching personnel are expected to work for the full business day unless an announcement is made. Employee information is provided to all radio and television stations; however, the stations do not always run the employee codes. Requests for leave may be honored after consultation with the employee’s immediate supervisor. Appropriate leave slips must be submitted.
