Board of Education
A 10-member Board of Education serves the educational needs and interests of Charles County. Nine members of the Board are elected by the community, while the Student Member of the Board (SMOB) is elected by Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students. The Board establishes educational and fiscal policy, provides overall direction and governs Charles County Public Schools. One student, who is selected by a committee, also serves on the Board. The student gives an opinion vote on most matters before the Board. Board members serve four-year terms. The next election is in November 2026.
The Board members appoint the Superintendent of Schools to manage the day-to-day operations of the school system. The Superintendent of Schools is Maria V. Navarro, Ed.D., who was appointed to her first, four-year term in 2021. Her current term expires July 2025.
