Larry Johnson, a longtime Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) educator, was recently named the new director of special education. His selection for the role was announced by CCPS at the Board of Education of Charles County work session held earlier this week.

Johnson brings to the role 18 years of experience in teaching and leadership experience. Prior to being named as director, Johnson served in an acting director of special education capacity for CCPS. He previously worked as a countywide content specialist in special education in which he provided instructional and compliance support to schools at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

In the content specialist role, Johnson also provided support to CCPS regionalized special education programs. Johnson is a product of the school system and graduate of Westlake High School. In addressing the Board on Monday, Johnson said he is excited to officially take on the new role. “It is an honor to serve in the county in which I grew up in. I appreciate all of the guidance and leadership provided to me while I served in an acting capacity and transitioned into the role. It is a privilege to serve this community,” Johnson said.

Prior to serving in a content specialist role in special education, Johnson was a classroom special education teacher for several years. He also spent seven years as an adjunct professor in the Graduate and Professional Studies Program at McDaniel College. Additionally, Johnson served as a national staff developer for four years, training other educators in evidence-based instructional practices.

He holds a dual bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, a master’s degree in special education from Trinity College in Connecticut and has completed coursework toward a doctorate degree in education at Walden University. Johnson also holds the Administrative I endorsement from Towson University.
