Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) held the Unified Bocce District Tournament Feb. 4. Seventeen teams from five CCPS high schools — La Plata, Maurice J. McDonough, North Point, Thomas Stone and Westlake — competed in the tie-breaking tournament that ended with four teams qualifying for the state tournament.
Headed to states are McDonough Team 1, the joint Stone-McDonough Team 7, North Point Team 2 and La Plata Team 3. The state tournament — which was postponed from its Feb. 11 date due to inclement weather — will be March 11.
High schools compete in Unified sports in teams made up of students with and without intellectual disabilities. A program of Special Olympics, Unified sports was inspired by the principle that training and playing together offers a pathway to friendship and understanding.
Other Unified sports offered by CCPS are tennis in the fall and track and field in the spring. The Polar Plunge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics Maryland, is also supported by students involved in the Unified sports program.
