Several Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students recently earned honors in the Junior American Citizens Contest, sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). The organization includes a Junior American Citizens Committee, which supports contests for children who promote patriotic development.  

The Junior American Citizens Contest is open to students in prekindergarten through Grade 12. Entries range from banners, poems and posters to short stories and stamp designs.   

This year’s contest theme was Sailing with the Stars and Stripes to Celebrate the 250th Birthday of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Entries are judged first at the local level, with first-place winners advancing to the state level. The Port Tobacco Chapter of the NSDAR sponsored the local contest. 

Nicholas Falkler, a third-grade student from Mary H. Matula Elementary School, earned a first-place local award and first-place state award. 

Avery Boarman, a fourth-grade student from Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School, earned a first-place local award, and a first-place state award in the poster category.  

Audra Dee, a fourth-grade student from Matula, received a first-place award at the local level and a first-place award at the state level in the stamp category.  

Addison Kelly, a sophomore from La Plata High School, received a first-place award at the local level, and a first-place award at the state level in the poem category. 

Charlotte Brown, a fifth-grade student from Matula, received a first-place award at the local and state levels in the community service category. 

The following fifth-grade students from Mary H. Matula Elementary School received first-place awards at the local and state levels in the banner category.

  • Zander Jones-Bonds, fifth-grade, third-place local award.  

  • Katherine Saenz Sanchez, fifth-grade, first-place local award and second-place state award.
