The University of Maryland Extension and Chesapeake Bay Trust are holding a media contest for Charles County high school students. Students can submit a one-to-two-minute video about proper ice-melting procedures that can minimize the harmful effects deicing materials have on the environment.

Ice-melting products, such as salt and other material, are applied to sidewalks, driveways and steps in the lead up to or after a snowfall or other weather event that could result in slippery walkways.

The over application of deicing materials can result in harmful levels of salts and nutrients entering storm sewers which eventually empty into the Chesapeake Bay. Deicing products can corrode metal, and damaging concrete and plants. For more information about safely melting ice, visit https://extension.umd.edu/resource/melting-ice-safely.

Videos are due by Wednesday, Nov. 15, and can be uploaded using a Google form to https://forms.gle/22kyg9LUBBnCyFgX8. Cash awards are given to the first-, second- and third-place winners.
