Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) hosted its annual winter chess tournament Feb. 25 at Henry E. Lackey High School. The tournament was open to students in kindergarten through 12th grade.

A total of 151 students competed in four rounds of grade-level division play, and one champion was named per grade level. Champions received a trophy and all other participants received medals.

The following students earned the champion award for their respective grade-level division.

  • Shivam Nayak, kindergarten, Walter J. Mitchell Elementary School.

  • Alexander Trout, first grade, William B. Wade Elementary School.

  • Edmund Eze Onodugo, second grade, Archbishop Neale.

  • Larra Victoria Carino, third grade, Indian Head Elementary School.

  • David Trout, fourth grade, Wade.

  • Carlos Borders, fifth grade, Wade.

  • Mason Kea, sixth grade, Mattawoman Middle School.

  • Aundre Dudley, seventh grade, homeschooled student.

  • Destiny Dudley, eighth grade, homeschooled student.

  • Giusepee De Lama, freshman, Thomas Stone High School.

  • Alfred Johann Cruz, sophomore, Westlake High School.

  • JaQrai Smith, junior, Westlake.

  • Jackson Bowler, senior, La Plata High School.
