Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) students hit the links last week for the middle school golf tournament.
Teams from Theodore G. Davis, Glymont, Matthew Henson, Piccowaxen, Milton M. Somers and Benjamin Stoddert middle schools took over the White Plains Golf Course Oct. 21 for the annual tournament.
Piccowaxen came in first place, Somers took second with Davis placing third. Throughout the school year, middle school students compete in countywide sports events including the golf tournament, and those for archery, volleyball, basketball and track.
Taking part in extracurricular activities at school stokes a sense of belonging and is another reason students are excited to attend school. “When students feel connected to their school through athletics, clubs, mentoring programs, performing arts or other activities, they are often more motivated to attend school, remain engaged and take ownership of their education,” Joseph Evans, an assistant principal at Stoddert, said.
“Exposing students to sports and extracurricular activities in middle school plays a significant role in their academic success, personal development and overall school experience,” said Evans, who coaches several teams for the Stallions. “It allows them to feel a part of the school and a sense of community. These opportunities provide students with experiences beyond the traditional classroom that help develop essential skills needed for success in school and life.”
