Maryland Gov. Wes Moore dropped by a Meals on the Move site this week to see how Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) food and nutrition services staff members ensure students who need it get food when not in school.

Lunch on Us and Meals on the Move, the Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) summer meals programs, continue operating through early August. Meals on the Move is a mobile meal program that visits three designated locations Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Parents can pick up multiple meals for children 2-18 through Aug. 7.

While visiting Charles County, Moore spoke about SUN Bucks, a program overseen by the Maryland Department of Human Services, to help families with school-age children buy groceries during summer break.

The program is available to families of children who receive free or reduced-price meals during the school year. “We know what this program really means to our families and we want to make sure that our families are getting [these resources],” Moore said.

Families that qualify for the Maryland SUN Bucks program will receive $40 for each eligible child in June, July and August to go toward grocery purchases.

Most students are automatically enrolled and do not need to apply. Program letters or a letter of eligibility have been mailed to families.

Gus Proctor, coordinator for the Charles County Torch Run, dropped off a shirt to Navarro and thanked Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) for its continuous support. The annual t-shirt sales help raise funds for the program.

Proctor has been the coordinator for over 19 years and under his guidance, the event has raised over $1.1 million in support of Special Olympics athletes.

CCPS students and staff support Special Olympics through participating in the annual Cool Schools Polar Plunge. High School Unified teams compete in tennis, bocce, track and field events each year.

Giant Food is celebrating its 90th anniversary and as part of the celebration, Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) is partnering with Giant in the 2026 Nourishing Our Youth Giant Food Round Up program. It is available at local Giant stores in Charles County July 10 until Aug. 6.

Upon check out, Giant customers can round up their purchase amount at the register to support CCPS’s food and meal programs. CCPS received over $9,000 in donations last year that was used to help support families that receive McKinney-Vento supports such as food outside of the school day. The McKinney-Vento homeless assistance act supports the education of children who are experiencing homelessness.

Thirteen Charles County high school graduates from the Class of 2026 were recently awarded scholarships through the Charles County Juneteenth Foundation Inc.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization with a mission to provide educational opportunities about Juneteenth and its history, bring awareness to the rich African American heritage of Charles County, provide scholarship opportunities and support Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) businesses.

Munachi Obinali, a La Plata High School junior and current Student Member of the Board of Education, has been elected to serve in the position for next school year. A total of 3,521 votes were cast in the election held April 7 through May 6, with students in Grades 6-12 eligible to vote.
